Founder Brad Anthonisz and his Central Coast CPA Accounting Practice Tax Stuff was a finalist in the 2026 Australian Accounting Awards, in the category Marketing Program of the Year. While Tax Stuff did not take home the award this year, it was their first time in attendance, and they were grateful to be recognised and had a blast at the awards ceremony.

How did you start down this career path?

My journey into the accounting profession began with curiosity and experimentation. While studying my Bachelor of Commerce, I worked at a local accounting firm in Erina, where I developed strong technical foundations in compliance, client communication and problem-solving. Before fully committing to a professional practice, I experimented with e-commerce ventures, which taught me digital marketing, sales psychology and risk tolerance.

Growing up, I was influenced by my mother, a successful small-business owner in web design, and my father, who worked in government agencies and taught me the importance of policy, structure, and accountability. Combined with the encouragement of my senior commerce teacher, these influences shaped my ambition to build something of my own.

In February 2022, shortly after obtaining my tax agent license, I founded Tax Stuff with one administrative staff member. Rather than follow traditional industry norms, I prioritised modern systems and proactive communication. In 2023, I made the strategic decision to hire an internal marketing and digital specialist. A move uncommon in accounting at the time, however, this is changing.

What inspires you in your role/industry? Why?

Entrepreneurship was modelled to me from a young age. My mother built a web design business and went on to win multiple local awards. Watching her create something from the ground up showed me that business ownership was not abstract but achievable with discipline and resilience. So….

To answer your question, I am inspired by entrepreneurship, building businesses, and team management. Although… I have always been a numbers guy, I truly enjoy the opportunity to work with clients with complex structures or who need unique strategies to help them reach their goals and optimise their tax situation. I love simplifying complexity.

What's your approach to customer service that separates you from the rest?

When I brought Louis Fairbrother on board from New World Media as our in-house digital marketing guru. I briefed him on the state of the local accounting industry and that I wanted Tax Stuff to be the ‘friendly neighborhood accountant’ that is both approachable and authoritative. Louis has implemented many initiatives and marketing campaigns since he started working with Tax Stuff, but I think some of the customer service work he did with the team internal had a major impact.

Louis implemented a CRM, call scripts per service we offer and has personally sat with and trained all the Tax Stuff staff – accountants and support staff on how to answer the phone and manage new clients and questions from existing ones. Our rule at Tax Stuff is that everyone answers the phone, greets clients when they come into our office, and offers them a coffee, tea, or a bottle of water. This task is mainly managed by the support staff, although, depending on who is available, the accountants are expected to do the same, even myself as the owner, I offer the same level of customer service.

I really think this has helped set us apart locally, as it naturally forces our team to stay humble, approachable, and friendly. Always available to pick up the phone and communicate with confidence to help solve our clients’ problems.

How do you innovate and stay ahead of industry trends?

Well…. I would say the Colonel doesn’t give away his secret blend of herbs and spices for a reason, but I think the answer to your question is more about a personality trait rather than a method or secret source. I think in the modern world, especially with the rise of A.I. it is important to be Open with a capital O.

Openness means you are more likely to be exposed to new ideas, trends or ways of doing things naturally. Dogma stifles innovation. So, I try to stay hungry and open to new ideas always.

What is the toughest challenge you've faced in your role? How did you overcome it?

I think hiring the right people has been very challenging, and I have made mistakes in the past. Hiring talented people in the accounting profession is obviously challenging, as currently there is a massive talent shortfall. But I guess what I am saying is that you can’t hire on skills and credentials alone.

You need to factor in personalities and soft skills, such as communication skills. Having a good team around you is an asset that can’t be overlooked and building one like that takes time and a lot of care.

I feel very lucky now because since I have become more intentional about this, I have built a team around me that is awesome, supports each other and helps my business grow.

What are some of your goals for the next 5 years?

I would love to be invited back to the Australian Accounting Awards and take home the big one, Accounting Firm of the Year Award! However, besides that, there are two other goals at the front of my mind over the next 1 – 5 years.

The first is a new venture I am in the process of launching. I need to keep it under wraps for now, but I expect you'll hear more about it early next year. I am working with an outstanding group of professionals from a diverse range of backgrounds to develop new Accounting Software Solutions for Australian Accountants. I am really excited about this, and this venture will be a major focus for me in the coming years.

The second is to continue to grow Tax Stuff! Maybe even open a second location. I have hired 3 new people in 2025, and I am looking for some partners to join Tax Stuff to help me expand the Tax Stuff footprint into new local markets. Louis and I have put a lot of work into the brand, and I think it's a great platform for aspiring accountants who are looking to break the mold.

Tax Stuff is a modern full-service Central Coast accounting firm built on three core pillars: Personal Accounting, Business Tax and Asset Protection & Structuring.

Our Personal Accounting division provides tax returns, crypto taxation advice, property investor strategies and proactive tax planning. Our Business Tax division supports sole traders through to growing companies with BAS lodgement, bookkeeping, payroll, advisory services, virtual CFO support and entity setup. Our Asset Protection & Structuring pillar delivers trust and SMSF setup, auditing and strategic structuring advice in partnership with trusted financial planning professionals.

Tax Stuff is successful because we have deliberately modernised a traditionally slow-moving industry. In 2023, we made the uncommon decision to hire an internal marketing and digital specialist to help build a scalable client-acquisition system and a modern brand presence. Since then, our client base has grown from 181 to 1,209, and revenue has doubled year on year.

We combine digital efficiency with genuine local service. The entire Tax Stuff team answers our phones, and we priorities clarity and proactive communication. Our growth has been driven by reputation, transparency, community engagement and our commitment to evolving with technology while maintaining strict compliance and data privacy standards.
