The Tax Institute joins the IPA Group
BusinessEXCLUSIVE: The Tax Institute has signed a formal agreement to join the professional body, pushing its membership up to nearly 60,000.
The Tax Institute (TTI) confirmed that it will join the IPA Group after a formal agreement was signed between the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) and TTI this month. The IPA and The Tax Institute will continue to operate as distinct organisations within the broader IPA Group community, with their own brands and identity.
IPA chief executive Andrew Conway (pictured, left) said that by bringing together two respected professional bodies with complementary expertise, the two bodies “can strengthen advocacy, expand professional education and development, and enhance access to technical knowledge and specialist support for members".
This follows a heads of agreement signed by the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) and The Tax Institute (TTI) in December 2025, exploring the acquisition, with subsequent TTI consultation revealing that 89 per cent of its members approved the proposal.
In a joint statement late last year, the two bodies said that they are brought together by the principle, “members are at the centre of everything we do”.
“The IPA and the Institute are aligned in our shared commitment to enhancing member value, strengthening our collective voice, and improving efficiency across the accounting and tax professions. We’re excited to explore this new relationship with them,” Scott Treatt (pictured, right), chief executive at TTI said late last year.
“The agreement reflected the complementary strengths of both organisations and a clear focus on long-term member value,” Conway said.
The bodies confirmed that they will each continue operating as distinct organisations under the IPA Group umbrella with their own brands and identities.
Similar to when the Institute of Financial Accountants joined the IPA Group in 2015, the bodies said that they would work to develop an efficient member service model to ensure the two entities would retain their own personal brands.
“Our focus is on preserving what members value most, while identifying opportunities to deliver even greater support, education and advocacy over time,” Treatt said.
“By creating a community of over 60,000 members and students in the IPA Group, we will be stronger and better together. We look forward to discussing the potential benefits of this proposal with our members,” Conway said late last year.
“Both organisations will commence the next phase of integration over [the] coming weeks. We will continue to provide updates as key milestones are reached,” TTI said on its website.
