Business

A national insolvency firm has announced the launch of its dedicated Asia desk, designed to provide Australian-Asian businesses with specialised advice and expertise.

Jirsch Sutherland has launched the Asia Desk, which comprises a multinational team of high-calibre insolvency, restructure and recovery specialists who have a strong knowledge of both local and Asian business cultures, practices and markets and fluency in some of the most widely spoken Asian languages, including Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi and Punjabi.

“This will enable us to provide Australian-Asian business owners and directors with pertinent advice, plus the convenience and ease of conversing in their own language,” Jirsch Sutherland partner Melissa Lau said.

Ms Lau will guide the Asia Desk’s insolvency specialists, Amit Ghumber, Yiran Lin, Patrick Tam and Fei Wei.

Ms Lau, a registered liquidator and accountant fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese and Bahasa, joined Jirsch Sutherland in May this year, bringing over 20 years’ experience in insolvency and corporate banking at leading firms in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Australia. The firm said in addition to an impressive track record of turning around large-scale public and private companies, she has expertise in forensic and fraud investigation, including asset and fund tracing.

Jirsch Sutherland said the Asia Desk will be a national operation, with local and international experience in a wide variety of sectors, including retail, hospitality, manufacturing, property, agriculture and construction. Its dedicated team will be offering Australian-Asian businesses and individuals advice on restructuring, financial strategy and insolvency procedures.

“We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our specialist Asia Desk, which combines deep understanding of different Asian cultures with strategic and technical expertise and language fluency,” Jirsch Sutherland’s national managing partner, Bradd Morelli, said.

“Under the direction of my colleague Melissa Lau, the team is well placed to work with business owners and directors and their trusted advisers.”

Ms Lau said: “I’m looking forward to meeting owners and directors of Australian-Asian businesses to discuss strategies to help them grow, change and prosper — whether it’s leveraging new opportunities, restructuring to improve performance, or winding up with the best possible outcome and to give them a strong start for the next venture.

“We are also keen to talk to accountants and advisers to help identify ‘red flags’ so any issues can be resolved before they impact their client’s business. At Jirsch Sutherland, we believe that the best outcomes are achieved with early action — the earlier the better.”
