Jirsch Sutherland has announced the appointment of Melissa Lau as a partner in its Brisbane office.

Ms Lau’s experience as a registered liquidator has seen her work across corporate recovery, turnaround, forensic investigating and auditing in Australia, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

She was previously a director with Rodgers Reidy, a senior manager in business recovery with Baker Tilly International and a senior consultant with Ferrier Hodgson.

Ms Lau was also a member of the Australian Restructuring Insolvency and Turnaround Association’s (ARITA) Insolvency Special Working Group, which worked to resolve issues in insolvency and corporation law.

Jirsch Sutherland Brisbane partner Chris Baskerville said he believes Ms Lau’s expertise will make her a “tremendous asset” to the firm at a national level.

“Melissa’s experience in Australia and Asia gives our team an added layer of knowledge and expertise across the local and Asian markets,” Mr Baskerville said.

Ms Lau said she had worked with Jirsch Sutherland partners in the early 2000s, and the experience was part of what attracted her to work with the firm.

“Insolvency is my passion and I am looking forward to continuing my work in this sector,” Ms Lau said.

“I’m excited about working with the team around the country in offering top-notch insolvency services.

“Because of my background, one of the areas I will be focusing on is the Asian market. I want to help people in difficult situations — whether business owners or individuals — who are under financial stress to achieve a far better outcome than could have been the case.”
