Xero connects live financial data to Google Gemini
TechnologyXero has launched a connected app for Google Gemini, which it says makes it the first financial management platform to do so, letting small businesses, accountants, and bookkeepers query live ledger data inside Gemini conversations.
Xero said the integration will allow customers to retrieve real-time financial answers, analyse business performance and complete routine tasks without switching between applications or losing financial context.
Diya Jolly, president of product and technology at Xero, said: "Connecting Xero financial data into Gemini conversations helps small businesses and their accountants and bookkeepers instantly check their financial position, track cash flow and manage invoices and bills, all without breaking their workflow."
"This is another major milestone as we continue to help eliminate operational friction and foster collaboration for our customers, delivering real-time financial intelligence wherever they work," she said.
How the connected app works
The app is powered by JAX, Xero‘s agentic platform. Small businesses and advisors who use it will see real-time financial data flow into Gemini while maintaining what Xero describes as secure, continuous synchronisation with Xero.
Xero outlined five areas of capability:
- Financial health and performance: generating Profit & Loss statements, tracking income and expenses, and monitoring balance sheets and cash position through conversational prompts.
- Sales and receivables: identifying overdue balances, drafting initial invoice summaries, tracking high-revenue clients, and managing recurring subscriptions.
- Purchases and payables: tracking outstanding payables, flagging overdue bills, and surfacing specific vendor payment requirements.
- Interactive visual reports: Gemini can turn raw data into charts, such as net profit/loss graphs and aged receivables distributions, within the chat interface.
- Organisation and contacts: retrieving business details, base currency information, and contact details for customers and suppliers.
Analyst view
Anurag Agrawal, founder and chief global analyst at Techaisle, commented on the implications for practices. "Accountants and bookkeepers can ask Gemini for a client‘s profit and loss, aged receivables, or cash position and get the answer, charted, from live Xero data," he said.
"The time that previously went into assembling those reports can go into helping clients understand what the numbers mean and what to do next."
Tasks feature to follow
Xero said a further capability is coming soon for customers on eligible plans, who will be able to work within the task toggle in the Gemini app. Using live Xero data, users can switch to "tasks" to create time-based schedules and workflows for routine work.
Examples cited include combining Xero and Gmail to prepare follow-ups for overdue invoices, or setting a recurring schedule for actions such as a daily summary of key financial information, including pending bills and current cash position. Xero did not provide a specific release date for the feature.
Human confirmation required
Xero said any operation that modifies financial data, such as issuing an invoice or sending a payment reminder, requires explicit user confirmation in the connected app in Gemini before it is carried out. According to Xero, the review step and final judgement remain with the accountant or bookkeeper and the business owner.
The company framed this as part of its commitment to "Accountable Intelligence", under which AI handles the heavy lifting and surfaces insights while humans remain in control.
Part of a wider integration push
The Gemini app follows other integrations Xero has introduced to give users access to their financial information in the tools they use daily. The company listed Microsoft 365, Claude, Claude for Small Business and ChatGPT alongside Gemini.
Xero is also introducing a capability that lets accountants and bookkeepers switch between their practice‘s client organisations while working across all of these integrations. The company said this is intended to give advisors access to real-time, client-specific data when they need it.
Data use
Xero said data responsibility is foundational to the Gemini integration, in line with its responsible data use commitments. Financial information shared between platforms is used solely for the user‘s session, and Xero data is not used to train Google Gemini models, the company said.
The announcement did not detail pricing, which plans qualify as "eligible" for the tasks feature, or regional availability, including whether the app will be offered to customers in Australia.
