MYOB joins Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network
TechnologyA workplace inclusion initiative has been introduced across MYOB’s Australia and New Zealand offices to support employees with non-visible disabilities, using a globally recognised symbol that allows individuals to discreetly signal when they may need flexible working conditions.
Accounting software provider MYOB has launched the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative across its offices in Australia and New Zealand, marking another milestone in its journey to foster a workplace where people feel “safe, respected and supported.”
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative, now adopted by MYOB, serves as a globally recognised symbol designed to raise awareness of non-visible conditions.
Originating in the UK in 2016, the Sunflower initiative is now a global movement spanning more than 90 countries, with over 30,000 locations across sectors such as transport, retail, healthcare, education, and the workplace.
By enabling individuals to discreetly signal a need for extra time, space, or support, the program fosters a more inclusive workplace environment.
MYOB said that the program enhances workplace inclusion and accessibility by empowering the community to recognise and support the diverse needs of individuals with hidden disabilities.
The initiative was formally launched in March 2026 during Neurodiversity Celebration Week, which aims to promote worldwide acceptance, equality, and inclusion of neurodiversity in schools and workplaces.
Reflecting on the significance of this initiative, Sally Elson, who is the chief people officer at MYOB, said: “Creating a workplace where people feel safe, respected and supported matters deeply at MYOB.”
“This Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative is a practical step that helps build awareness of non-visible disabilities and encourages more understanding in everyday interactions,” she added.
As part of its commitment to building a more inclusive workplace, Elson emphasised the importance of ensuring employees with non-visible disabilities feel recognised and supported.
"When people feel seen, valued and supported, they are better able to contribute, connect and thrive,” she said.
“MYOB’s adoption of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower reflects a genuine commitment to creating a workplace where inclusion is embedded in everyday interactions and where people with non-visible disabilities feel empowered to be themselves."
Speaking with Accountants Daily, Amber Johnson, the general manager of OD at MYOB, said that the company is measuring the impact of its participation in the Hidden Disability Sunflower initiative through both training uptake and cultural change.
“We’ll measure success in a few ways…. First, through completion of Hidden Disability Sunflower training that builds awareness, with more than 80 per cent of team members already completing it,” Johnson said.
“We’ll also look at how well that understanding is being reflected across the employee experience, including whether people feel more confident asking for support.”
“For us, success is about building awareness, trust and everyday inclusion, not just launching a program.”
When asked about specific feedback received from employees since the launch in March, MYOB said that responses had been largely positive, particularly regarding how the initiative has shaped workplace conversations about hidden disability.
“People have told us the initiative has helped make conversations about hidden disabilities easier to navigate,” Johnson said.
"We’ve seen an increase in the number of team members sharing their identity as neurodivergent and heard it’s prompted more awareness of how teammates can be more inclusive.”
Across MYOB offices in Australia and New Zealand, green Sunflower badges are available for employees with non-apparent disabilities, while white badges signify allyship and awareness.
Ultimately, the initiative aims to cultivate an environment that is more inclusive, understanding, and supportive of both team members and customers.
