As part of its plans to build a “more sustainable public service”, the government has announced the largest cuts in public service jobs will be at the ATO.

In Tuesday night's Budget, the government announced it anticipates that over the four years to 2017 the Australian public service will be reduced by 16,500.
“The largest reduction in public service jobs will be in the Australian Taxation Office,” said a joint statement from Senator Mathias Cormann, minister for finance and acting assistant treasurer, and Senator Eric Abetz, minister for employment and minister assisting the prime minister for public service.

“The government has brought forward reductions previously planned for 2015/2016 by one year, which will assist with the broader effort to repair the Budget,” the statement said.
“The Budget forecasts for the 2014/2015 year will see total staffing in the general government sector return to the level last recorded in 2007/2008.
