The chief executive of the IPA has called on CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand to formalise ties in lobbying efforts, after a period for the profession as a whole which has been "too much about advancing individual brands."
Andrew Conway called for the re-establishment of the joint accounting bodies, which comprises of presidents and chief executives of CPA Australia, CA ANZ and the IPA. The idea of the union is to present a united argument to government on policy items such as tax reform, to add more firepower to its lobby.
“When you get a submission from a group of bodies saying the same thing, it’s far more powerful than disparate voices,” Mr Conway said at the IPA’s national congress on the Gold Coast this morning.
“We need to do more as a profession from a collective point of view. We need to put public interest ahead of personal or professional body interest. There’s been too much about advancing individual brands, and not about advancing the brand of accounting,” he said.
The joint accounting bodies last met in 2012. Since then, there have been significant leadership changes and structural reform at CA ANZ and CPA Australia.
Rick Ellis took the reins from Lee White as chief executive of CA ANZ in May this year, and is currently conducting a review of the association’s operating model.
In a corporate governance and executive remuneration saga that spanned the bulk of 2017, the CPA Australia board sacked its CEO Alex Malley in June this year, and is set to have an entirely new board of directors by 1 January 2018.
