Business

With the deadline for 2017 applications fast approaching, the accounting industry has flexed its muscle and established itself as the most desirable destination for new graduates.

Announced by specialist graduate resource provider GradAustralia, the Top 100 Graduate Employers revealed a dominance by big four firms in particular, who occupied four of the top six spots, cementing the large professional services firms as an attractive option for graduates.

Deloitte Australia (2nd place overall) was deemed the winner of the accountancy and financial management sector, with EY (4th overall), PwC Australia (5th overall) and KPMG (6th overall) rounding out the top 10 rankings.

Mid-tier firms were also heavily featured amongst the top 100 positions, with Pitcher Partners (72nd overall), Grant Thornton (86th overall) and Kordamentha (95th overall) claiming their spot on a list which featured the likes of Microsoft, Goldman Sachs and BHP Billiton.

“As Australia shifts focus towards a knowledge economy, graduates continue to be a critical part of our workforce so we are delighted to have been so highly recognised by them, the future leaders of our business,” said Alec Bashinsky, chief human resources officer at Deloitte.

“In addition to our focus on top talent from more traditional commerce and accounting backgrounds, we are committed to highlighting the breadth of careers available within Deloitte for top graduate talent from STEM backgrounds.”

According to Mr Bashinsky, the rise of technology consulting, cyber security and data insight service offerings, coupled with the disruption of audit, advisory and tax services have created a raft of new opportunities for graduates.

“We pride ourselves on being an employer of choice for talented people with many different backgrounds and believe this wide range of diversity helps us tackle our clients’ most complex problems.”

Google Australia took out the coveted top spot, awarded by Leader of the House and Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science Christopher Pyne.

“The government is building a national agenda around science and innovation, so it’s important to commend these employers for their focus on nurturing young talent and fostering new ideas and innovation,” said Minister Pyne.
