Nixon urges accountants to seek further education

Speaking to AccountantsDaily, Mr Nixon, who is the latest high-profile speaker to be announced for the AccountantsDaily Business Advisory Day, said accountants need to develop a different set of skills to succeed in the new accounting environment, skills traditional education offerings aren’t currently delivering.

“In the last week I coined the phrase, 'to grow, you have to know',” Mr Nixon said.
“Accountants know about what they’ve been doing for a long time. They know tax, they know compliance, they know whatever they’ve been taught on CGT and other technical matters, but as you go into business advisory that’s a different animal again. You've got to know about marketing, sales, what services to offer and then you've got to know about delivering those.
“These are new skills that typically aren’t taught in the regular accounting programs so if you want to grow your business through business advisory then you’ve got to learn some new skills, not just marketing skill, selling skill, product skills and delivery skills like all of us.”
Mr Nixon said he is excited to be part of the AccountantsDaily Business Advisory Day as he believes it is a rare opportunity for practitioners to learn these practical skills that will help them on their path to business advisory.
“We are looking forward to getting in front of a couple hundred people and getting this message out there,” he said.
“It’s a three-step message really: get better with what you’ve got in your firm, get capacity, and then grow. Grow with business advisory services that really help the client.”
