The advisory board will work closely with PwC' s chief diversity and inclusion officer, Marcus Laithwaite, and provide counsel as the firm implements its diversity and inclusion strategies.

The seven external members announced by PwC’s chief executive, Luke Sayers, yesterday are:

• Paul Zahra, former chief executive and managing director of David Jones Limited;
• Graeme Innes, former disability discrimination commissioner and Australian human rights commissioner;
• Dawn Hough, director, Pride in Diversity;
• Professor Robert Wood, director, Centre for Ethical Leadership;
• Nareen Young, director, PwC Indigenous Consulting and former CEO of Diversity Council Australia
• Benjamin Chow, deputy chair, NSW Multicultural Business Advisory Panel
• Julie McKay, executive director, UN Women Australia

Mr Sayers said the firm's external advisory board is a continuation of the firm’s deep commitment to creating a more diverse and inclusive workforce.

"We continue to pilot and develop innovative programs, and we are now seeking external advisers who can help to ensure we meet our goals and learn from the best practice across Australia and globally," Mr Sayers said.

One board member, Paul Zahra, praised PwC for its focus on diversity.

"I commend PwC for focusing on diversity and inclusion as more diverse ideas brought to the table means greater innovation which leads to growth," he said.

"However, creating a more diverse and inclusive workforce is not just a sound business objective; it is the right thing to do.

"The board will support PwC to generate greater awareness of the issue and encourage people to stop and think if they are being inclusive in their decision making."

Another member, Julie McKay, applauded the firm’s diversity initiative.

"PwC Australia has some exciting initiatives on gender equality. I am pleased to join their board as well as have PwC and UN Women Australia partner to work towards achieving our shared goals," she said.
