SMSF audit’s real capacity crunch lands around EOFY
BusinessA new report on the trends in SMSF audit practices has revealed that autumn carried almost a third (31.6 per cent) of annual audit volume as EOFY draws near.
Cloudoffis, which supports both accounting and SMSF advisory firms and automates the SMSF audit process, has released its SMSF Audit Crunch Report, a first in a five-part data series that explores what is happening inside audit practices in the SMSF sector.
The report drew on over 76,200 audit jobs, 68,748 funds, and more than 5.1 million documents processed on the Cloudoffis platform during FY2026.
The data shows where that pressure is building across six measures, including the end of financial year crunch index, audit cycle velocity, audit query volume, document ingestion mix, practice capacity signal, and platform-wide growth in funds, jobs, and documents.
The EOFY Crunch Index, which looked at monthly completions, showed that the industry’s true peak occurs during autumn or May, not spring or October during the SMSF annual return (SAR) deadline.
Indeed, May proved to be the high-water mark of FY2026, with 8,939 audits completed in a single month, 11.7 per cent of the entire year’s volume.
“The industry’s heaviest workload is clustered closer to EOFY than to the October SAR deadline,” the report said.
“Practices that plan resourcing around spring alone may be preparing for the wrong peak.”
Leaving things to the last minute
The report noted that this pattern is not unique to SMSF audits, and fits a broader Australian habit of leaving tax and accounting work until deadlines are “uncomfortably close”. Oneflare data on tax support requests found 94.0 per cent of enquiries in the May-June window were lodged just five days before 30 June.
Tax role job postings jumped 199.0 per cent during the same run-up period in an earlier comparable year, the study found.
“Seen in that context, the autumn audit surge looks less like an SMSF quirk and more like the downstream effect of client behaviour across tax and accounting,” the report said.
“For practices, the implication is simple: staffing for a spring peak alone risks leaving the real crunch under-resourced.”
Meanwhile, September recorded the fastest year-on-year growth at 24.8 per cent, but spring accounted for 24.3 per cent of annual completions, lower than autumn and illustrating seasonal trends.
Compliance weight adds to crunch
Cloudoffis co-founder Manish Sheladia said the report has come at a time when the SMSF sector is facing two major regulatory changes. The first major change is Division 296, where from 1 July 2026, earnings attributable to the portion of an individual’s total super balance above $3 million attract an additional 15 per cent tax, with a further 10 per cent applying above $10 million.
The second major shift came in August this year when new limited recourse borrowing arrangements (LRBA) over residential property were banned. New LRBAs can now fund real property only where it qualifies as business real property.
“That combination sets the scene for FY2027: more funds, more audits, greater valuation pressure and a changing investment mix – all under a sharper regulatory lens,” Sheladia said.
“For practices already feeling the autumn capacity crunch, the next peak may not simply be busier. It may also carry considerably more compliance weight.”
Automation can ease bottlenecks
Sheladia said standardisation of platform and automation tools could help accountants and auditors manage the EOFY crunch.
“Standardisation could play a big role in ramping up efficiencies,” he told Accountants Daily.
For example, when auditors use auditing tools on Cloudoffis and accountants use the accounting solution like SMSF Sorted on the platform, it leads to a standardisation of processes, he said, as auditors receive the data through a portal.
“If accountants are using the portals as well and auditors receive the data, their processes become efficient, and they can churn things much faster,” Sheladia said.
Cloudoffis co-founder Viral Kanabar said that as a result of this standardisation, accounting firms are fulfilling their compliance obligations before Christmas because of the availability of the data feed and the information from the platform, as well as its integration with other SMSF platforms.
“If auditors are using an SMSF audit platform and accountants are using SMSF Sorted, the audit could be just one click away,” Kanabar said.
“It's about accountants and auditors working together and figuring out which funds they are processing every day. Most of those funds are ready by November or December with one click. The accountant doesn't need to spend a lot of time handing that data over to an auditor because these two platforms talk to each other. With one click, the information goes to an auditor.
“You could divide your workflow into pre-Christmas, Christmas, and post-Christmas and manage it well.”
There is scope for expansion for auditors who use technology well, Sheladia said.
“We are seeing that our customers are growing their business every year because they can process more audits than before with the same headcount,” he said.
