The New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) has issued its member, Harmon Singh, with a censure and $550 costs order after he pleaded guilty to a charge of assault following a bar altercation.

According to reports by the NZ Herald, Singh had been celebrating his stag do in Queenstown in October 2023 when he got into an altercation with another patron. After bumping into each other on the dance floor, the victim poured his drink on Singh before turning away.

Singh responded by smashing his glass over the victim’s head, causing him to bleed profusely. The victim was taken to the hospital by ambulance, requiring staples to treat the cut on his head.

While the incident had occurred during Singh’s personal time, the NZICA’s professional conduct committee found that the offence had discredited the profession, noting the violent nature of his offending and subsequent media coverage.

“The Committee considered that being charged for assault with intent to injure, which is a criminal offence, constitutes conduct that falls well below the standards expected of a Chartered Accountant,” disciplinary documents from a June 2025 meeting read.

“This is the case notwithstanding that the incident occurred in the Member’s personal life rather than in a professional context.”

To avoid legal costs being borne by CA ANZ’s wider membership, the committee deemed it appropriate that Singh cover the $550 costs of the proceedings.

The committee noted that Singh appeared to have accepted that his conduct had been “well below the required standards,” and expressed remorse for his actions. He had also taken remedial steps to prevent any future similar occurrences.

“The Committee also acknowledged the Member’s decision to reduce his alcohol consumption and to make meaningful changes to his life so as to never end up in such a situation again,” disciplinary documents read.
