On this episode of Under the Hood, Imogen was joined by co-host Lee-Ann Hayes and guest Ani Tuna to break down the small business CGT concession space – a popular area with listeners!

On this episode, Ani, former BlueRock head of tax advisory, shared the definition of small business CGT concessions and why they’re important, why she views small business CGT concessions as her “first love”, common and recurring errors she sees when applying the concessions, missed opportunities and what clients need to know and what they should ask.

  1. Under the Hood: Let’s talk tax residency part 2

In this second part of an episode on tax residency, co-hosts Imogen and Lee-Ann delve deeper into the complex area of tax residency with Vantage Accounting director, Michael Messner. In part one, the trio chat about what tax residency is and who it applies to, how and why it applies to residents all over the world, the purpose of it and why it’s so outdated, what we should do to tackle and modernise tax law and what the profession wants and suggests.

    Under the Hood: The post-election tax landscape

Before this year’s federal election, Imogen and Lee-Ann jumped behind the mic to chat about what could be expected and what was unlikely within the tax landscape. The pair provided a recap of the front-of-the-mind tax issues at the time, as well as thoughts on the $1,000 standard tax deduction, Division 296, payday super, Division 7A and the Bendel case.

On this episode of Under the Hood, host Imogen was joined by Accounting Home Loans directors Cullen Haynes and Andrew Johnson. Haynes and Johnson shared the fun fact that accountants were eligible for certain benefits when looking to buy property, and provided insights into the benefits and opportunities available to accountants when looking to secure a home loan.

Johnson and Haynes also shared the origin story behind Accounting Home Loans, why accountants could access certain home loan benefits, the process behind securing a home loan and how accountants can do it, and why accountants should leverage their home loan opportunities.

  1. Under the Hood: What you should know as Code of Conduct Changes come into play

On this episode of UTH, host Imogen was joined by Peter de Cure, chair of the Tax Practitioners Board. De Cure shared the requirements and obligations of the newly enforced Professional Code of Conduct changes, what he had been seeing, as well as what practitioners could and couldn’t expect.

De Cure delved into the changes to the code, what they meant and how they would impact the profession, what the TPB expected from small and large firms, breach reporting and whistleblower protections, what the process had been like for the TPB and what de Cure expected to happen from here.

This episode featured the accounting tech update for Q2 2025 from Heather Smith and Tyler Caskey. The episode also included details on ‘must go to’ tech events, the Airwallex x Wheel x NetSuite integration, Employment Hero v. Seek, and a discussion on MYOB’s recent development, Solo Money.

  1. Under the Hood: FTDT – the sleeping giant awakes

Robyn Jacobson, tax advocate and specialist, joined Under the Hood to break down the complexities and intricacies involved with family trust elections and family trust distributions tax, and why she dubs it “the sleeping giant”. 

She also shared why there is increased interest in family trusts and family trust elections, the key features of family trust elections, FTE, FTDT, IEE, and what they all mean, why FTDT is “unforgiving”, and cases where FTDT liabilities are arising unexpectedly and/or impacting the ability to make distributions.

On this episode of Under the Hood, Imogen was joined by fellow podcast hosts, Tim Garth and Dan Osborne, from the Two Drunk Accountants. On this collab episode, Tim and Dan shared their own business story, their perspective on AI, and the wins and challenges associated with running a small business.

Jarvis Archer, one of Australia’s most successful liquidators, joined Imogen on this episode of Under the Hood to unpack small business restructures and their success rate. Jarvis shared some interesting perspectives, experiences and thoughts towards the insolvency mechanism, which could be deemed controversial for some. 

Jarvis also shared his current outlook on the insolvency industry, when, how and why SBR works versus when it doesn’t, director penalty notices and director loans, as well as his prediction for the future of small businesses and insolvency.

  1. Accountants Daily Insider: Solving ATO debt and winning clients for life

Hank de Jonge, executive director of de Jonge Read, joined AD Insider to bring a rare combination of technical expertise and personal experience. After losing his own business more than 20 years ago, Hank spent the last two decades helping business owners across Australia avoid the same fate. In this episode, Hank shared what business owners and their advisers need to know when it comes to dealing with ATO debt, and why locking into a payment plan wasn’t always the best move.

In the episode, Hank also shared the role accountants played in de Jonge Read’s process, why small business restructuring is so popular and advice for accountants and advisers with clients heading down the insolvency route.
