BDO Australia has revealed the appointment of five new partners to offices across the country in a move to further strengthen the firm’s commitment to growth and reinforcing its national presence.

The new partners welcomed by the firm in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, and Brisbane included Masao Kamiyama, Katie McNamara, James Smithers, Nick Anderson, and Joanna Adams.

Kamiyama joined the Melbourne office as a partner in global expatriate and employment taxes, alongside McNamara, who joined the Melbourne office as a project and infrastructure advisory partner.

Kamiyama was noted to have over 20 years’ professional experience, with a “deep expertise” in personal and employment tax compliance services, particularly for Japanese expatriate executives working in Australia.

BDO said Kamiyama’s appointment underscored the firm’s focus on enhancing its cross-border capabilities and client support services in the area.

“Masao is widely recognised as a key liaison between Japanese businesses and major accounting firms in Australia. His career includes a significant tenure as the Japan Service Desk Leader at a global accounting firm, and most recently, he held a senior leadership role at Vialto Partners,” BDO said.

As part of the new role, Kamiyama was set to focus on helping clients navigate complex compliance requirements, minimising tax risks, and tailoring strategies to suit individual circumstances.

McNamara, joining the Melbourne office as a project and infrastructure advisory partner, would be responsible for leading the BDO sports and entertainment team.

David Garvey, BDO Melbourne office managing partner, said both Kamiyama and McNamara brought unique qualifications to the firm.

“Masao’s extensive experience spans a wide range of industries including energy and resources, mining, financial services, IT and technology, retail and consumer, manufacturing, automotive, food, industrial, construction, and real estate,” he said.

“Katie and her team have built a reputation as trusted advisers across the sports, events, arts and visitor economy sectors with more than 40 years combined experience. The team has delivered some of the most significant sporting, major events and cultural projects in Australia and globally.

“The move of her entire team to BDO ensures clients can enjoy seamless service continuity and retain access to the deep sector knowledge, technical excellence and strong relationships that have defined the practice.”

The BDO Sydney office welcomed Smithers as a partner in project and infrastructure advisory.

Smithers has over 24 years of experience in strategic infrastructure planning, investment decision making, and policy development, as well as a “strong track record” supporting government and private sector clients in transport, energy, water, housing, and decarbonisation.

Sydney office managing partner Grant Saxon said Smithers specialised in helping clients facing infrastructure challenges and focused on the development of robust business cases, shaping strategy, and aligning capital programs with long-term objectives.

“With the ongoing strong pipeline of infrastructure projects in NSW and across Australia, it is critical that we have a strong team of experienced advisers in this space. James brings a unique ability to bridge technical, financial, and policy perspectives,” Saxon said.

“His expertise will be instrumental in expanding our infrastructure advisory capabilities and supporting clients through the early stages of major infrastructure programs.”

Also joining the BDO network as partners were Anderson, joining the Adelaide office as a business services partner, and Adams, joining the Brisbane office as a partner in CFO advisory.

BDO said Anderson had over 21 years of experience working with “sophisticated investors” in family office environments and multinational corporations in Australia, the UK, the US, France, Germany, and the Netherlands.

“Nick specialises in family office engagement, corporate and commercial advice, and guardian and estate matters. He has extensive experience developing and implementing strategies, simplifying investment and operating structures for family offices,” the firm said.

Anderson was also noted to have regularly engaged with family and corporate stakeholders, working closely with family groups and family businesses to establish legacies for future generations.

In Adelaide, Adams was set to bring more than three decades of professional experience in financial reporting, audit support, and statutory compliance,

“Joanna is known for her collaborative and solutions-focused approach, and her deep technical expertise in Australian Accounting Standards and corporate reporting. Joanna has experience working with large multi-national clients, especially in the mining and resources sector,” BDO said.

“She specialises in optimising financial reporting functions, guiding organisations through complex reporting obligations and accounting challenges, including audit readiness, corporate restructures, and implementation of new sustainability standards.”
