EY has announced the appointment of two new partners to its fast-growing Oceanic law practice.

Steve Johns has joined EY as a corporate law partner based in Sydney. He is joined by another new partner, Emma Maconick who will lead the Oceania data and technology law team in both Australia and New Zealand.

Mr Johns, previously of Bird & Bird, will focus on cross-border M&A and joint ventures within Australia and Asia, with a particular emphasis on the technology and services sector.
Ms Maconick will use her 20 years of experience in deep tech globally to head up EY Law’s data and technology practice as it focuses across ITC contracting, corporate transactions, law privacy, cyber security, AI and technology innovation.
She will focus on “complex innovation, development and growth issues for global clients in technology and data intensive sectors”, a company media release stated.
In his new role at EY, Mr Johns said: “As an M&A lawyer with [a] focus on cross border and strategic transactions, and particularly transactions in the technology and services sectors, EY’s deep knowledge of industries and sectors gives me a unique insight into businesses and the challenges they face. EY also gives me the global reach, platform and people to serve my clients better, wherever they are located.”
While for Ms Maconick her appointment signals the beginning of an exciting new challenge.

I have had the privilege of serving sophisticated clients in the US and the UK for over 20 years, and it’s clear that one of the greatest opportunities ahead of us will be around how we develop, leverage, manage and dispose of our global Digital capabilities. Leading the team that supports clients, governments and communities on that journey in New Zealand and Australia is an exciting challenge that I look forward to, along with the rest of the preeminent team at EY Law,” Ms Maconick said.
EY Law leader for Oceania, Sarah Ralph, is delighted by the practice’s continued growth to meet client needs, believing that the appointments of Mr Johns and Ms Maconick affirm this growth.
