With the support of Intuit QuickBooks, Accountants Daily hosted the ninth annual gala black-tie awards ceremony at the Star in Sydney on Thursday night.

The Australian Accounting Awards is one of the most anticipated events of the year. It identifies the top firms and professionals in the accounting industry across the nation and celebrates the best of the best. For the winners and finalists, it’s an opportunity to bolster their professional standing and advance their careers.

The awards are known as the benchmark for excellence around Australia as they focus on professional development and innovation, and recognise the successes of accountants, bookkeepers, partners, superannuation specialists, thought leaders and executives, as well as rising stars of tomorrow.

More than 500 members of the accounting profession attended the awards dinner this year to celebrate the achievements of the top performers.

There was light and laughter throughout the evening as the award ceremony’s emcee, stand-up comedian, actor and presenter Dave Thornton, provided the entertainment.

This year, Accountants Daily received a record 652 submissions across 22 individual and 14 group categories, with 297 short-listed as finalists, and 22 walking away with trophies, with all eyes on which individual winner would be chosen as the recipient of the coveted Excellence Award.

Carbon Group CFO Mason Dunn won the Excellence Award, after being named Chief Financial Officer of the Year earlier in the evening.

In his opening address, Accountants Daily editor Philip King thanked the award entrants for putting in “an awful lot of work” in compiling their submissions and making the “special effort” to enter.

“The Australian Accountants Awards offers a moment to pause and honour the best of the best in the profession over the past 12 months,” he said.

“Thank you and congratulations to all of tonight’s finalists and eventual winners. Whether you took home a trophy tonight or not, you can and should be extraordinarily proud of yourself and your achievements.

“There is no higher reward than the acclaim of your peers. The awards night is about celebrating and toasting our winners, along with the winning spirit in every one of you.”

Accountants Daily thanks principal partner Intuit QuickBooks, platinum partners CPA Australia and Ignition, gold partners Accountancy Insurance, ChangeGPS, IPA Group, AltX, Jirsch Sutherland, Act2 Solutions, Assetline Capital, Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Dext, event partners Finni and MindBridge, and charity partner Invictus Australia.
