From 1 July 2027, the 50 per cent CGT discount will be replaced by indexation, and a 30 per cent minimum tax will be introduced for capital gains. The legislative changes will also impact pre-1985 assets, with any increase in value of a pre-CGT asset from 1 July 2027 onwards becoming subject to CGT.

The government has also announced various carve-outs, including concessions for innovative businesses, with some measures still under consultation.

The new CGT laws mean many clients will require additional tax advice, valuations and planning. In this upcoming webinar, Grant Thornton’s David Montani and BusinessDEPOT’s Rebecca Mihalic will break down the reforms and discuss how accountants can manage the evolving needs of their clients.
